Requirements

Basic Requirements for Certification as a Type B Home Child Care Provider

( The following is a partial list.)

  • 18 years of age or older
  • High School Graduate 
  • 6 months experience with children of all ages
  • Three references to verify experience, ability, and character
  • Completed medical
  • Everyone 18 years of age or older living in the home must sign a conviction statement that they have never been convicted of any crimes listed in Senate Bill 38 or had a child removed from their custody.
  • Local and state police background checks are done. Each adult in the home and emergency/substitute providers must be fingerprinted. There is a fee of $15.00 per card to cover the processing of each BCII fingerprint card. This is be paid for by the applicant.
  • Proof of residency in the state of Ohio for the past five years. If not an Ohio resident for 5 years, then an FBI fingerprint card is required. There is a fee of $39.00 per card to cover the processing of each, besides the state card fee.
  • Two emergency/substitute providers are required. A police background check is required for them as outlined above.
  • Training mandatory.
  • Home Requirements
  • 35 square feet of floor space required per child.
  • Working telephone in the home.
  • At least one working smoke detector on each floor and in the basement.
  • At least 1 A10BC Fire Extinguisher.
  • First Aid Kit.
  • Child proof covers on electrical receptacles not in use full time.
  • Home inspected for fire safety and child proofing annually and unannounced visits in between.
  • Providers allowed no more than 6 children in their care at one time, which includes any children of their own under the age of six.
  • Other Requirements
  • Providers must complete 12 hours of training the first year of certification. Each year after, they must complete an additional 6 hours of training to keep in compliance with certification.
